fuel pump

Post by phil63 »

I have a pump problem , it ticks when the engine is stopped and the ignition is on , but the carb isn't flooding . When pumping into a jamjar there are no air bubbles !! The pump has been playing up a bit but has worked ok for some months , so I was thinking of a new one . Has anyone got experience of the electronic pumps ?

A petrol pump that ticks slowly when the ignition is switched on but the engine is not running is not a cause for concern.

But it's bad practice to have the ignition on and engine not running anyway. Heats up the coil no end!

pump

If a ticking pump is not a problem , why is it the new one I have fitted does not do it ?

Did you fit an electronic one? I have a new electric one and its eerily quiet.

if it is ticking when there is no fuel going into the carb, it was either sucking a little bit of air or the pressure on the outlet was seeping back through the pump, meaning it had to recharge.
If ther eis no leakage then the pump will stop ticking altogether - (forever) when the engine is not running however this is a bit of an unreasonable expectation for an old pump. If it is ticking more than once every 10 seconds with engine off this indicates a lot of leakage, but not terminal.
