Mazengarb head

I told you I was onto a Mazengarb OHV conversion in the "Alta head wanted" thread.

Well, after a few months chasing this down, I've finally got my hot little hands on it :D .

Sure, it needs some work but nothing too drastic. I'll get hardened seats fitted & new valves/guides made for it & that will just about do it.
The head gasket will have to be handmade also as well as relocating the radiator inlet.

It came with everything else needed for the conversion, incuding extractors :lol: .

I can't wait to see how my lowlight performs with this beauty on top :lol: .
It was fitted to a car in the '50s & at the time was the 2nd fastest Morris Minor in Australia :o . I'm not too sure that I want a lowlight rocketship but it should make the car a lot more driveable on the longer trips.

scott, I had some fun with hommade gaskets, I had one blow too! a dumb suggestion perhaps but the ALTA gastket looks prett dam close to the one in you photograph, the holes are all in the same place after all, I recon it may just fit, and they are available remanufactured new form the MMOC.

I love the 'extractors'

Thanks for the gasket tip. I'll grab our club's copy of Minor Matters & get in touch with the club spares co-ordinator.

Actually, my biggest problem at the moment is rockers.
I'd heard reports of the originals being weak & prone to cracking. Indeed, around 1/2 dozen of the ones I have have been repaired at one stage of their lives.

The head came with a new set of rockers but the quality control is a bit to be desired. Some of the rocker ratios appear to be less than 1:1 also.
I've done the rounds of motorcycle breakers in an attempt to find a match (all car rockers seem to be too big) without success.
I'm looking at modifying the pressed metal type rockers from the 'A' Series engines to suit. At least they're easy to find if something goes wrong.

Speaking of rocker ratios: Does anyone know if the rockers used on the Alta conversion are 1:1 ? I would assume they would be.
If I cut down the 'A' Series rockers to 1:1, they would be a near perfect fit for the Mazengarb head.

**Edit** I've looked at your info in the MM site. It's a very interesting story you have on your car. How could you possibly part with her after all this time ??
I'll send you a better picture of my head gasket in a PM tomorrow. Would you be able to see how it compares to the Alta type ? The bore apertures in mine aren't round (I assume this is due to the bigger inlet valves fitted) so I'd greatly appreciate it if you could check yours to see if they're similar.

it looks pretty close, also oval form to the bores for the same reason, slightly different shape maybe, sure i will get you a picture, if you can tell me how to put photos on this forum?

i dont see my car so often at the moment as a freind is looing after it for me (no parking at my place) the gaskets are in the boot! so it may be a few days.

You need to have the photos hosted on a website.
I use http://www.imageshack.us/index.php but there's others around that are just as easy.
Then you can use the [img]%20&%20[/img] around the link they create for you.

I think the later type of rockers fitted to the minis that were the sintered type certainly look very similar to the ones u have, you can pick up a set really cheap on ebay i think

'A' series rockers are too big. The distance from the pushrod pivot to the shaft is near perfect but the other side is too long.
I'm thinking I could shorten the pressed metal type rocker arms fairly easily to suit. This would leave me with 1:1 rockers which are the same as the original.
OHV engines don't seem to use 1:1 rockers.
I'm assuming the OHV conversion for the SV uses 1:1 rockers to retain the same valve lift as original.

That picture of all those rockers and just two valves had me wondering just how on earth it all fitted together :lol: :lol:

Scott,

With the Oz-buck exchange rate low at the moment, might it be worth finding out if someone could reverse-engineer the head casting and produce a new one? I've tried to get the Derrington head in my garage copied over here in Wales but the cost is too high.

I'D BUY ONE OFF YOU!!!
