gearbox cable?

gearbox cable?

Hi all while preparing tot ake off the engine off my van I found a cable passing through the crossmember it has a sort of setting by doing or undoing a nut, i've never seen one like this before does anyone know what this could be?, the van is from 1970 and was en ex telephone engineers van abck in the uk thanks

It's there to stop the fan going through the radiator in an emergency stop. They seem to have been taken off a lot of vehicles, but I'd rather have one for peace of mind.

I *think* so, except early ones - I only know the commercials though, but somebody will tell us if I'm wrong :D Blimey - just looked - it was a bit fast, wasn't it...

It started being fitted to the last of the Series II Minors, so all the Minor 1000s (all varients) should have them fitted.

I think it is also designed to stop the engine unit moving forward when you press the clutch - but it shouldn't be done up 'tight' - just slightly slack.

Yes, it seems to have a dual function. Stopping the engine hitting the radiator in an emergency situation and helping to prevent clutch judder.
