Amanda, upon previous recomendation I have used motorbike fork oil in the past; a suitable application and is readily obtainable

This comes in various grades too.
I wanted to uprate my dampers so going on advice from Practical Classics Magazine I have recently filled them with heavy duty motorcycle fork oil. First impressions are that they are much firmer and to my liking. I have been warned elsewhere that this may be too much for the damper bodies to cope with so I wouldn't recommend this just yet. I'll keep you all posted as to their performance - it could be a cheap, stop-gap upgrade for those who don't want to spash out on telescopics.
As to the motorcycle grade equivilent to standard oil, I can't say, but it's cheap enough so suck it and see.
(D'oh I meant try it out  )

There's a risk that if too "thick" an oil is used in the dampers the mounting bolts may shear off!

In which case I feel a law suite against Practical Classics may be in order.

Amada,

Penrite Oils advertise damper oil - they seem to think it's ok.
