Solenoid Mounting Screws

I have removed the old Solenoid from my beloved (!) 1971 Traveller, but the screwheads have had it, so cannot be reused to re-mount. I have bought the closest match I could find (5mm, 0.8mm thread), although the screw starts to go in, the thread is obviously wrong.

Does anyone have the spec of the correct screw, where to get them from, or any other ideas of how to re-fix the solenoid?

Any ideas greatfully received!

Either take the screws to a specialist supplier, or use large self tappers (if it's mounted on sheet metal like the bulkhead or battery box) or drill and re-tap for a known size screw.

...or you could just use cable ties!

Or buy yourself a thread guage - although an easier way would be to take one of the screws to a specialist supplier, who will measure it and supply new

Seem to recall it being the same thread as the coil ones on Triumphs, and I found about half a dozen various screws of different lengths but the right threads in an old tin when trying to put the solenoid back on the pickup, so I reckon it'll be a common enough size to get a couple from somewhere. Not likely to be metric though!

When you phone the Moggie suppliers to order the part- ask for the screws as well- they usually can send the right ones, if asked.

Reviving an ancient thread but I am restoring my engine bay at the moment.

I too discovered that the solenoid to bulkhead screws were strange and nothing I had lying around would fit. I didn't want to put rusty old screws back in a pristine engine bay.

The information in this thread is incorrect. The machine screws that hold the solenoid to the bulkhead are 2BA. This makes sense as BA is used in electrical equipment (headlight mounting to wing are 2BA for in instance) and also the Hockey Sticks on the front panel (also 2BA). For the washers and spring washers 3/16" will fit in the absence of BA washers. In terms of length 2BA x 1/2" will suffice but I think the original screws are a bit longer (they are in the car at the moment). ESM sell 2BA x 1/2" Panhead Pozi. The originals Phillips but will do.

Yes but when I searched it was the only thread I found on the subject and it is not helpful if the only thread is actually incorrect! If you put the wrong screw into the bulkhead of the car that's it, the thread is toast.

Combined sidelight/flasher to wing screws (or bolts), nuts, washers, spring washers Lucas 632 also 2BA !

Grove Components sell kits of 2BA stainless steel headlight mounting screws or you can buy BA fixings from suppliers such as Westfield Fasteners. It is useful to have selection boxes of nuts, washers, bolts etc if you do a lot of work on your Morris. Unfortunately, the Morris is rather a mishmash of different thread standards: BSF, UNF/UNC, BA but this is for historical reasons and you just have to get used to it! If a thread won''t start or a spanner doesn't really fit it's very likely you are using there wrong thread/wrong tool.
