Fuel Guage

Post by rogermaddieboy »

Hi I have got a 1967 van and have fitted a new sender unit in the tank and also fitted a second hand voltage stabaliser. I could not get a reading off the guage even though the tank is full. When I start the van up the guage suddenly moves to registar a quarter even though the tank is full. Can anybody help please :(

fuel gauge

Post by Willie »

you must have the correct type of sender for the type of fuel gauge, your
unit MUST have the Lucar push on type of connection. the sender unit must
be mounted correctly so that the float on its arm can rise to the top inside the
tank. The Lucar terminal should be,as far as I can remember, pointing to
the right hand side of the car viewed from the rear looking towards the engine. If you have it in the wrong position then the float cannot rise high
enough to register when full because it hits something inside the tank. The
clue will be if the gauge reads ok when the tank is empty and ok up to nearly
half full but will not go any higher. What was it reading before you fitted a new sender unit?

Thanks for that. Before I fitted the new sender unit the fuel guage just use to flicker. When I took the old one off I did not notice which way the lucar connection was faceing.I fitted the new unit aweek ago and it was not until yestaday it started registaring.

fuel gauge

OK, so your new sender is actually causing the gauge to read more than it
did on the old one so, hopefully, you have solved the problem and it will read
full scale when it is fitted correctly in the tank. It is worthwhile checking that your gauge and wiring is ok by the simple action of turning on the ignition and
removing the lead from the sender unit and touching it to a good clean part
of the tank. It should read 'full' and if it does then either you have the sender
wrongly positioned in the tank or the float has some petrol in it. If it does not
read full then connect the lead to another part of the chassis, not the tank, and
if it now reads full your tank is not fully earthed to the body. It has happened
before! NOTE... if you are going to take some time with the testing with the
ignition ON but engine not running then disconnect the '+' or 'SW' lead from
the coil to avoid burning it out.
