I have on my cars!!

All the correct sizes. (Apart from a few metric ones holding on the front and rear panel - but those will be replaced by the proper Whitworth sizes.

My point is just because you have a bodged car doesn't mean you have to add to the bodgery by rounding off the bolts by using the incorrect size tools! ;)

Nikki, all the correct sized buts and bolts are available for just a few pence each, so you can undoo the bodges!!

Have no fear John...

When I put Hebe back together I'm using zinc plated bolts and I'm going to go for a size that I know I can get in Canada! (So probably metric! :O)

Roger, I can spot a few glaring errors there immediately in that table!!!! for instance 1/4 whitworth is most definitely not the same as 9/16 AF or 14mm.

Whoever posted that on e-bay is just trying to sell the improper sized tools to rip off classic car enthusiasts. In fact it looks very much like a badly scanned table with a "Franklin" logo pasted on top to give the table some credibility.

Don't believe everything (indeed anything) you read on E-bay!

You can get imperial sized bolts there too! Its just over the border from the USA ;)

Its just ocurred to me that the table could apply to those expensive sockets/ spanners sets that grip the flats of the hexagon rather than most bog standard tools which grip the corners. (They have curved bits on the inside of the tool to grip the flats of the nut).

In that special case the table could be right, but for the majority of corner grip tools, you really do need to use the right size to avoud "rounded nuts or skinned knuckles!" ;)

you mean metrinches? ive used em a few times to get bolts off that have been seriously rounded! (not by me.....)

Happy Easter everyone

I'm about to take off the driver's door but I am not sure what size socket I should be using - the 9/16 and 14mm are too big?

Is there a Whitworth for this size, and if so where would I get hold of one?

Whatever you all decide to do - please DO NOT try using Metric spanners/sockets on Minor nuts and bolts as suggested by 'millerman'. You will only ruin your knuckles - and damage the heads on the fixings. There are no original metric fixings on a Minor - although some may have fitted them in the course of repairs.
Be assured that Canadian Tire have all the Imperial size nuts/bolts/tools/taps dies you will ever need - and all at half the cost of the same stuff in the UK !

Hi Alastair

The drivers door bolts are 5/16BSF (1/4Whitworth spanner/Socket Size)

Most fixings on the Minor were originally BSF inc all suspension and body. Most Engine bolts were UNF (AF)

Anyone doing work on a Minor should have a set of BSF/Whit spanners/Sockets.

I have lots of spanners & sockets for sale - some NOS VGood quality makes & some good used mixed makes in MM, AF and Whit/BSF sizes.

Hi, I am trying to remove the front brake cylinders but don't have a socket to fit the small bolt that holds the cylinder in place (as well as a larger 1/2" bolt). Does anyone know the correct Whitworth or AF size please? It's 8.5mm across the flats.

Hello Millerman,

no I'm sorry that is not good advice. A couple are near enough on common car bolt sizes e.g. 11mm and 7\16" AF and possibly 14mm and 5\8" AF. (14mm, of course is not a common Metric bolt size however)

Using the right size spanner\socket makes working so much easier and minimises damage to existing fasteners.

As mentioned in other thread socket size is 1/8Whit but 11/32AF is a very close fit & will work.
