FIRST TIMER

Post by kifemeuh »

Hello everybody
I'm just comming back from a great experience ...Driving a MInor !! :D :D

Well , it's the first time for me and i have to confess that i'm a bit disapointed :(

The car i drove was a very sound one , original and mint woodwork ;restored bodywork , nearly new interior ....
But ...let me try to describe the sound ...
First gear , ok , here we go , and suddenly at about 20/25 mph , big rumble from ...down under ... :o :o Well ok old lady , lets try second gear ...less much noise until we hit 30/35 MPH , then big rumble , :o :o same as in first , ok ...let's use third , better , far better ...until we hit 50 MPH ...and then ...guess what ?? big thunder again !!!
The owner says it's normal , it's the usual sound for a minor...

IS IT TRUE ???

IS THERE ANYONE ON THIS FORUM , who live in France , and will be kind enough to drive me in a mechanically sound minor, to find out how it should sound ???

Perhaps one of you could record the sound of his car while driving , and then put the file on the forum ???

Thank's for helping

that is quite a lot in first.... I do 20 at maximum revs. But Kifemeuh, if the body is good and solid, thats the most important thing!

I'm not sure of the speed , i'm french remember , and an ordinary french :D have to concentrate a lot to use his left hand to ..............change gear ...
Anyway that sound is very loud ....

Onne , i know mechanical side will not be such a problem , but the asking price is 9500 € ( 6500£) so ....

that is enough money to have an excellent engine indeed! But did you really do 25 MILES in first? If that's km it's more normal

No ...i think it's in second gear ...
But i'm quite sure it's not the engine but the gearbox or transmission ...that make noise

I have the same problem, at the same sort of speeds you describe (over 35mph in 3rd and 50mph in 4th). Is it accompanied with lots of vibration through the gearstick and clutch pedal?

I have no idea what it is but as I only use my car around town it isn't too much of a bother. My guess would be engine main bearings or thrust washers though.

noise

KIFE...If the car really is £6,500 then It should be absolutely perfect, you
could get an excellent one for half of that price in the UK. The car will be
noisy compared to the modern types but the noise should be exhaust and
road noise not mechanical rumblings. Don't like the sound of the one you are testing, certainly not at that sort of price.

I might add, the prices are a lot higher overhere, £6500 is rule rather than exception here, but I agree with you Willie, it should be perfect, almost concours.

I agree...

Mine makes a loud "fart" on over-run (decellerating) & changing up at certain revs.

This is normal...mechanical rumblings are not 8)

That's what i think too !!!
I'm prepared to pay nearly 6000£ ( 9000€) for a perfect car with some nice mod like: servo, seat belts front and rear , and would be nice if she has been converted to LHD , alternator ....and that's it ...

Possible ??? [/quote]

Very possible indeed, I'd say, just not in Holland.

Il faut mieux s'adresser à:

AMICALE MORRIS MINOR FRANCE,
rue Paul Tourseiller,
46700 DURAVEL.

Contact: Chris & Mary HALL.
