Hi all you moggy boffins, I am fitting a water temp' gauge and an oil pressure gauge to mungo (56' splitty ) and can anyone help me with what socket sizes i should use on the engine block to get the blanking bolt out (water ) and the oil pressure switch, also is there anything special i should need to know about fitting the gauges. your help would be most appreciated. sid
Do not know the actual socket sizes but I had no trouble undoing these items
with my collection of AF and Metric sockets. The water thread is a taper type
and you should not need a washer on it!
I can't remember the sizes, but you must make sure that the electrical supply for the temperature gauge (if it needs one) comes from the voltage regulator behind the speedo for the fuel guage. If you do not your reading will be affected by the state of charge from the battery and the charge of your dynamo/alternator. The wire to use is a green wire comeing from the regulator at the top to the guage at the bottom. The speedo can be a real pig to remove, if you can't find the screw heads (found through the holes in the glove compartments) I suggest a friend to hold a torch while you negotiate a screwdriver in with a mirror! Remember not to completly remove the screws but undo them two or three turns.
Where is it on the block ? Only two places I know for the temp sender (or bulb) are in the head - near the thermostat cover, and in some thermostat covers themselves. The oil pressure switch needs open end spanner to remove - then screw in the T piece in it's place.

Actually if the thermostats not there, the car can run hotter. The thermostat creates turbtlance as the water goes in to the radiator, allowing a higher heat transfer.
Hmmmmm, I better get one then. I don't think the radiator is clogged, as it is one of the older honeycomb type, so thermostat should be be worth a try. Thanks Matt, and sorry Sidsmith for hijacking the thread.
You MUST run a thermostat - or a 'blanking sleeve' if you are going racing. Without it the water at the back of the block (where you have your sensor) is not circulated properly.
