Regular maintenance - that's the thing. Never had a stud shear in 40 years of A series emgines ! And I have removed a LOT of heads. If the nut's not for turning, find out why, and fix it - don't just heave on it.

Wise, wise words (though rather obvious), I'm sure. More to the point, fit new studs before doing up the head nots to the specified torque.

New studs cost a small fortune - the later studs have a little 'dimple' on top, and these are reckoned to be stronger. It's also a good idea to put thick washers under the head nuts - BMC used to sell these as a 'Special Tuning' part for Competition use - but any thick washer will do just fine. And the threads should be lightly oiled - all this allows the nuts to be pulled down to the torque setting without twisting the stud unduly.
