Moving to France

We have had a lovely convertible morris in our family ever since I can remember. My Parents are moving now and were going to sell momo as we affectionately call her! but I have managed to get the money together to buy her myself. The tricky bit is I live in the South of France now and I want to get her out here. I was wondering if a) There is an owners club in France
b) You know of anybody with a morris in france I could contact c) if you have any info about getting a morris covered to be abroad. My Dad has the insurance he gets through MMOC and they only allow the car to be abroad for 45 days which is obviously no good. d) suggestions on a cheap way of getting her over here without having to drive her all the way!

Any help on any of these points would be very welcome, or if you can point me towards someone else who may be able to help me.

Nice idea Matt and Salty Monk but I dont really want her to do the milage, it's more than shes done in the last ten years probably! I ll try the car-train. Still hoping to make contact with someone in France.

There is an occasional poster on here who moved to France only I cant remember who it was and its a while since I have seen a posting.
As for relocating the car Luca who posts on here took one to Italy last year maybe he can offer some advice.

Hello Kiki,
there is an old car interest in France, and I would guess that insurance will not be a problem. I would look at some of the French Classic Car magazines. You will qualify for road tax free status, but I believe you are restricted in driving only as far as the next departments to yours.
We have a flat in Cap d'Agde (Herault) and drove there and back last year in our Traveller. The whole trip with tolls and Ferry was over £500; there is the Motorail option of getting your car down there but that will be a £200 to £300 I would guess.

We certainly had a lot of interest by the French of our Traveller, one service station attendant couldn't believe we'd travelled from the UK in such a small car.

Would like to get my Morris registered in France. Apparently you need a manufacturers certificate of conformity which MG Rover France wants to charge me 113 Euros for. Is this certificate a general one (ie could I photocopy somebody else's), or is it specific to the car. Any help would be gratefully received.

Try and contact Pete and Mary Hall who should be able to give you further info. They used to organise the MMOC MOT every year and have now moved to France. Old editions of Minor Matters have carried stories of where they are and I know they they took 1or 2 Mogs with them.

My inlaws moved to toulouse last year with their 2cv's and citroen mehari, pm me and I'l let you know their details I'm sure they would be able to help. The cars are all now on french plates.

Hi!

There is an article in one of the Minor Matters (I think it was the issue before the current one) about taking Mogs to France and insuring them.

Anyone got the mag to hand?

So yet another Minor leaving the UK eh? Mine's off to Washington!

One thing I'd advise is not to try and change the keeper at the same time you export the car - DVLA red tape makes that next to impossible so probably best to change the keeper BEFORE doing the export paperwork.
Also you should now have a V5C which makes it easier to export the car as you can keep the main part to use when re registering and also notify DVLA of the export with one of the tear off pieces.

Errr, Ray,

How close do you mean with the V5 thinggie? My partner is going to have to take the official ownership of my car in order to export it (Based on my Visa I can only export a car for a year before having to return it to the UK)

It's Exportation -2 months. I'm guessing I should "give" her the car now right?

Yes - ASAP would be best.
To do it properly you can go to a DVLA 'local' office and apply for an export certificate suing the dates of shipping etc..
They advise not to try and do it at last minute

- It would be good to start checking the 'official' export procedure ASAP as well.

If you're going to transfer it to your partners name it's not as much to stress about compared to selling the car to someone new who lives abroad.
DVLA rules state that you MUST send of the reg document to change keeper otherwise you are liable for parking fines, speeding fines etc.. however they also state that if the car is exported the V5 should stay with the car to aid registration in the new country.
On the old V5 you just couldn't do both

so there was no 'correct' way for someone from elsewhere in Europe to come over and buy your car.
Either you could apply for the export docs but the car would still be in your name after you had sold it (so if the new keeper decided to spend a week in the UK getting fines before leaving Britain, YOU would be liable), or you could send off the V5 but then new owner would have no way to re-register the car in his/her country as they need the V5 and DVLA will not send a V5 to a new keeper if they are outside of Britain.
