Engine Number
Can anybody enlighten me on the engine number of my Minor? The car is a 1970 4 door Deluxe, first registered 06/05/70. The engine number on the rivetted on plate at the top of the block reads AEG75 RS52263. The car has been modified in the past eg Sierra disc brakes and has an alternator fitted, although i'm not sure if this is one of the original fitments. Any ideas?

That's a poser. Not in any lists for the late 1098cc Minor vehicles. Is the same number on your registration document? The correct number for a
minor with factory fitted alternator begins 10V-190-E-H(or L). Perhaps it is
a larger engine? Does it have tappet covers beneath the manifolds?

From the V5, the original engine number suffix is 10MA UH, indicating that the alternator is an later addition. The current engine is metallic blue in colour (definately not hammerite) instead of BMC green. From information on MG engines i found on the net, it could be a factory replacement. Does anyone have information on Gold or Silver Seal engine numbers?
Several books and web sites state that a few of the last production Minors were fitted with alternators. Approximately 3500 4 door minors were produced in 1970, mine was first registered on 6th May 1970. It appears that AEG is a BMC (Unipart) Spare part number, and could mean the engine is a post Gold/Silver seal factory replacement engine.
Indeed, the 1970 Drivers Handbook show a wiring diagram with a positive earth alternator. The AEG engine number info came from the MG Club's engine specialist. All i know is that the plate rivetted to the block states AEG 75 RS52263. I've got to get out this weekend and work on the Minor, so i'll have a good check round and see if i can turn anything else up.
