The thing is, how is a nut on a taper joint gonig to come undone? Unless the taper has been broken (near impossible unless the nut worked loose, and near impossible for the nut to work loose unless the taper's broken), at which point you'd darned well know about it and ought to have the sense to stop the car anyway!

I missed the bit about only the presence being testable, which does certainly suggest the use of a nyloc or split pin is mandatory - But that doesn't explain the cars I've owned (and possibly still do, I've forgotten exactly how the ball joints are fastened on my current lot) that have used plain nuts with spring washers. But mandatory or not, a five minute trip to the motor factors to buy a nyloc of the correct size should still have been enough for the MOT man, and stopped this thread expanding! :)

As I recall, I did say at the beginning of all this that that was what I'd done, but that I was unsure (despite that having passed 1 MOT) that it really was legal...

You are right. But some people really keep on driving until a wheel falls off. A spring washer is a good solution as well, but not for all things, some really need either a castenut and split pin or a nyloc.
Like an axle or a halfshaft

And on a lot of taper roller bearings the split pin is pretty much all that keeps it together by the looks of things! Finger tight nuts on the ends of stub axles always trouble me...

Just to hi-jack for a while...

Andrew... I think one can see where your interests lie. Who else would combine a JBL creature Speaker and a mog part?! :D

Pure art! :D

...and who else would have them both living on the desk in the bedroom? :D I don't expect too many people have *looks around* - a flywheel, brake discs, a crank etc in their bedroom either...

Nah, just some numberplates (and the back plate for one of them) and the processor / floating point boards from a Modular 1 Minicomputer...

To get back to the original post. The "re-test" was due some days ago, did it pass?

It's not silly to have a gearbox, a grille assembly, an exhaust system, hubcaps, complete set of glass, rubbers and numerous other bits in the living room is it? At least the engine has moved to the garage

I found a spare hub/ upright for a car I got rid of last year, in the airing cupboard the other day.

And there's another in the bathroom.

Just found an air filter on my desk, and a cooling fan in the bedroom.

But I've not got anything major in here anymore, too much other none car clutter! :(

And there was me thinking I've not got any car parts in the house - untill I 'really' thought about it.

Wheel nut covers for one car on the desk in front of me, steering wheel for another in the understair cupboard, water pump for another in a cupboard..... I stopped then just in case the wife caught me!

But this reminded me ........ I read on another car forum that the dishwasher is great for cleaning alloy engine parts, as I have not needed to do this (or had the wife out of the house for long enough!) I haven't tried it. So is it true, does it work?

Back OT did the car pass 2nd time?

Oh yes - it works just fine! But do an 'empty' wash afterwards before your Mrs comes in and catches you!
