Cutting steel

Post by ptitterington »

Buy the expensive very thin stainless steel cutting discs, you may need to shave the retaining ring on the grinder a bit thinner, but they cut mild steel like a hot knife through butter with much less sparks (sorry for the crappy english)

Why do I pass on this tip, because this evening I cut out loads of rot on the chassis with ease............ :D

Yes, good tip! you have to be careful with the 1mm stainless cutting discs!! or you end up cutting off rather more than intended. Much quicker though, than the 4mm cutting discs, which I now use for grinding.

SR told me that an air hammer/chisel is even better for removing rusty panels, although no doubt quite a bit noisier.

A jigsaw for cutting out the repair patches, combined with aviation snips (£5 from machine mart), followed by careful filling to get the piece to fit the hole accurately.
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

I also treated myself to a sealy 3'' air grinder and a sealy air nibbler which is lovely for cutting up the sheet steel.

They were both on xmas special half price too :)

What size compressor have you got to run your chisel?
Does it run out of air at any time/

Merry Christmas
