I believe that at least some, probably the newer ford type kits, use preloaded bearings which is why you do not need to torque up the centre nut and doing so will result in premature wear of the bearings. Whereas the original Morris type wheel bearing requires the nut to be torqued to the correct value.

Once the slack is taken up in the appropriate way for the bearing type, the split pin is the essential item as this prevents the nut moving and the resulting hub destroying wobble.
