But early cars weren't fitted with washers as standard. AFAIK it's one of the few things that HAS to be retrofitted for MOT. So it's anyones guess what was fitted to these cars.

Edit:
Ooops.

That'll teach me to read page 2 of the posts before posting.........

I still think they are mandatory though.

I've tried cleaning the valve but still have the same problem. My hands are too big to get behind the dash, but I think its a problem there. I took the water bottle off and blew down the tube and the leftover water in the tube did shoot out over the windscreen. Any more ideas?

Ohhh - well indeed it sounds like the pump has indeed packed up. Your going to have to get it out - either take the glovebox or the speedo out.

Well, just for your information, and this may not have anything to do with the British MOT,in Holland I don't need an windscreen washer. Only cars built after dec. 31st 1971 have to have them

I'm wrestling with this very problem. The washers haven't worked since I got Miriam, so I have had a broddle about with them today. It's a tricky little job, but much easier if you take out the glove box, and the lining out from the hole on the drivers side. My system seemed to work fine when I cleaned it all out, but as I was about to put it all back in the Car it gave up again. There is plenty of power in the button pump, and all the pipes seem clear so, looking at this thread I suspect it's a faulty non return valve.

I will swap that and see if it fixes it then.

MOT time is looming and I think, as has been said, if you have washers they have to work.
