How do you clean the points. Where are they? Anyone have a diagram?

If you persistently get the pump stopping until you tap it smartly then it is
not fuel vapourisation it is more likely dirty points, wrongly adjusted points,
OR quite commonly the internal setting of the diaphragm adjustment is wrong. This is a fairly critical adjustment and you need the workshop manual
to be able to do it properly. Since the diaphragm is made of a fabric type
material it can and does stretch with age which alters the 'overthrow' action
of the rod which normally actuates the points causing them to fail unless you give the pump a sharp tap.
KITCO.....The points are under the plastic cover where the wire is connected.

I've just been re-reading Practical Classics -
The tick tick is more likely to be the pump working, not the points themselves.
As for the originality - I really don't believe anyone would add a noise to a part on purpose!
And some of the 'electronic' fuel pumps actually have points anyway

Apparently Burlen do electronic points kits for SU pumps - "complete with the tick"

Oh dear....
