Hi there, i posted a topic previously with the same question but after further work there has been no improvement.
When the engine has warmed slightly there is a constant squeeking noise coming from seemingly the front of the engine. The noise sounds exactly like a squeeking distributor. I have now taken all the sparkplugs out, i have removed the distributor and removed the pulley belt, inorder to have the engine free turning with no compression. By turning the engine manually using the crankhandle there is a definite squeeking noise from the engine and at that rpm sounds more like running your finger down a wet window or slowly removing a cork from a wine bottle. Further to my previous post i have removed the timing chain and examed for rubbing and got new tappets as the other were very worn. I have isolated individual items and can safely say that it not the distributor, not the water pump, not the dynamoa and not the distributor drive shaft. Please help as im completely puzzled. I have in the past 6 months changed the crankshaft bearings, con-rod bearings, piston rings, cylinder head, water pump and rocker assembly.
Try running the engine and holding a solid rod (timber or screwdriver) to various (non moving!) areas. Andrewsxt and I did this to his car the other week when a noise seemed to be coming from the front. It turned out with the screwdriver it was most noisy at the distributor.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.
From what you say you have removed or isolated it seems to me that
the only parts left which would squeak whenever the engine was rotated
are the crankshaft, including the four big ends and the main bearings, the
camshaft, and the timing chain assembly. You do not say if you checked for
the squeak whilst the timing chain was disconnected? You stated earlier that
the squeak occurs once the engine has warmed up which would seem to
indicate that it only happens once the offending item expands with heat. If
this is the case then it would be hard to locate when you are inspecting cold
components.
Bit off the wall but why not try, with the engine running and the squeak sounding, giving all moving parts (well the one's you can get at) a small spray of WD40 or similar - one at a time.
If the squeak stops after a spray on a part - they you are!
If that doesn't work then perhaps the noise is internal?
But I can think of anything internal that would make the noise you describe.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
Steve
The squeeking doesnt sound like it is coming from deep in the engine which is why im so puzzled that its not the usual dynamo bearing or the distributor getting thirsty. Stupidly i didnt check the squeek whilst the timing gear was off but i did check for any rubbing components or signs of. Would a crankshaft bearing provide that sort of squeeking as there is no rumbling from the engine and the squeek as i said did sound external.
I'm coming in late on this one and it may already have been covered, but is your fan belt too tight. Checking and loosening the belt on my car cured a 'mysterious squeak' a little while back.

It is highly unlikely that anything which was sqeaking on the crankshaft/big
ends etc would last for long without failing completely since these items need
to be running with full oil lubrication to survive! With the fan belt removed
and the plugs out you seem to have ruled out ALL of the usual suspects.
It is possible to have a slight squeak from the manifold to engine gasket if
is needs tightening or renewing but, without plugs, that noise would usually
disappear.
Hi. Hope you have solved your squeek by now but I thought I'd let you know about my annoying squeek. The fan on the dynamo has worked slightly loose and although turns with the dynamo, it slips slightly causing a squeek. I haven't had time to look at it yet, but I'm sure the fan normally locates on a notch on the shaft. I'm guessing the notch has worn away. Don't know if this helps.
I have seen a Scania V8 engine with a squeak sound that the front bearing for the cam shaft has turened a bit so it has almost cut off for the oil pressuere for the bearings.
If you take your oil filter off and cut it in 2 pieces you might see some "shiny" bits there ( looks like small pieces of silver / gold ) - very often stuff from bearings.
You can also take the oilsump off and see if any "shiny" bits is in there and then yo can also examine main and con rod bearings.
I have exactly the same squeak, spent hours dismantling trying to isolate the problem, but still can't find it to fix it.
Disconnected mechanicals one by one and still it remains, I hope that someone else has had the same problem and fixed it so we can eliminate the long nights in the workshop.
