What should the prefix be on a '57 saloon?
with 948.
I think it's APJM/H
am I correct?
A friend of mine asked me, and I just want to make sure he has the right number, since he has lost his engine number plate
thanks in advance
Onne

engine number
Well, that is a poser for the 1957 year because during that year the engine
number changed from APJM to 9M-U-H (high compression).

it does start with APJM, the later model starts with (etc.
USHM2 is sidevalve without waterpump
USHM3 is sidevalve with waterpump
APHM is OHV 803cc
APJM is early OHV 948cc
9 M is later 948cc
10 M is the 198 from '62
10V is the final 1098 engine

Numbers
The total Minor production in 1957 was approximately 103,900, and the last
car number of that year was approx. 569,000. so ,assuming steady output
during that year you can work out roughly when your vehicle was produced.
Unfortunately, this still will not tell you when the changeover from APJM to
9M occurred. I think your only chance is to ask for owners of 1957 cars who
have their original engine numbers to let you know their engine prefixes.
This will be difficult because,as on my own 1957 car, I have no idea what the
original engine number was since it has been uprated to a 1098!!

I hink the car was made in march '57, and it has the original engine, so I'll just take it that it is APJM
It's not my car btw, but of an Italian guy, who asked me to find out
Thank you very much indeed Willie, you are brilliant
