If your speedometer has seen better days and you suspect it's inaccurate etc. then contact www.jdo1.com or telephone 01535 662701. 2 day turnaround. Fixed cost £30 + return postage.
My speedo was reading high plus unsteady needle plus reluctant to chnge miles at 10000 increments.
Prior to sending to JDO the mileage was compared with a "modern" car and found to be 1.2 miles different on a 65 mile journey. This confirmed the miles calibration to be correct.
On checking by JDO the speed discrepancies were +5 @ 20mph, +9 @ 40 mph & + 12 @ 60mph. This has now been corrected.
The unit has been fitted in the car for a week now and has worked faultlessly over about 200 miles. I'd previously tried slight re-routing of the cable to eliminate the unsteady needle. Not now necessary as it glides smoothly up and down and remains steady at whatever speed the car is travelling. The speed is "spot on" checked against a "modern" car. Can't yet comment on the 10000 mile change over yet, another 5000 to go.
There are other companies which repair/recalibrate mechanical speedometers, no doubt doing as good a job but JDO are cheaper and offer a quicker return. (5 days including time in transit).

Just to back up the above message I too recently had to send my speedo for calibration & general refurbishment after a change in diff and oil leaking up the speedo cable into the speed. JDO were excellent with atotal cost of £38.95 inc P&P and the speedo went away on a Thursday and was back in Inverness on the Tuesday.

This is good service and when John he was really helpful & knowledgeable.

That's over in Blighty though, p&p would be expensive, mine stopped working during moist and cold weather. would like to know a dutch specialist, but then, this is the English Forum, the dutch people are not as active as they are here, please look at our website http://www.morrisminorclub.nl and enjoy our adventures . To test your speed I find a good way is to drive at a continuous speed along a straight road (say at 30mph) it should take you 2 minutes exactly to complete one mile.

After speaking to John on Wednesday afternoon and explaining the urgency, I parcelled up and sent him my speedometer which needed both repair and re-calibration.

First post this morning, and the unit is already back with me!!!!!

Now that is what I call SERVICE!

Just bought my first Moggy. My speedo has gone on the blink. It just goes past the 80mph mark. As nice as this would be given the lack of mementum, I fear that something is amiss!!!

Is this the sign that I need a callibration? Or worse... a new speeometer?

What exactly is the problem as you say it goes past 80mph and most will, I assume you mean at a lower speed, can you be more specific. Also this should not be under Useful Tips but in the Other section.

Hi Kevin. The dial goes off the scale as soon as the car moves. It lodges itself the wrong side of 0mph. All other gauges work fine. Do you think that it could be a broken or fractured cable?

It won't be the cable.
It'll be jammed inside the speedo head itself. Sometimes oil works it's way up the cable & gets into the speedo innards & jams them up, but I have a feeling yours has suffered a seizure if it goes straight to 80.

If you can afford it, send it to the above guy (first post). He is a nice man and will sort it for around £35. I had my spedo callibrated to the milometer as it was way out but recording the correct distances - much like the problem you have.

Thank you all so much. More help here than I thought! Glad I bought the Moggy! I'm going to examine the cable thoroughly and then I think I'll probably send it off for a once over. I've acquired an old mini speedo which should be ok in the meantime. I've got to recommend the guy in the magazine who does mail order parts too! I've received a box full of servicing gear today which has cost a fraction of what I would've expected and delivered next day!!!

Rich remember that the mini speedo wont read correctly either as its made for a car with different ratio's and wheel size so you will need to follow another car to find out how much out it reads.
One other point do you know how to remove the speedo as its held in by 2 screws that are only accessible through a small hole in the side of the glove boxes and dont undo the screw more than a turn or so as it will fall out and dissapear behind the dash.

Thanks Kevin. I've already had it out once, but didn't have the time to fully diagnose the problem!!! I think that the oil symptom could be the key as my fuel guage keeps sticking. This could be the additional effects of oil passing into the speedo from the cable I think. Thank you so much, once again... I am learning rapidly: just serviced all the brakes this weekend and she's stopping beautifully now.

Costs are now c. £50 for standard repairs - but JDO are still giving good service and advice, and I'd recommend.

My new Speedo from ebay was £5 or so - including post! It works perfectly, and is correct with miles and speed - on my 3.73 final drive.
I have better uses for my spare £50!!

If, however, you driving a bog standard 948 with an original diff (4.55) you won't be able to buy a ready-to-use speedo for under £50 in months of watching. Plus this retains the correct mileage, and saves having to confuse the insurance company when on a limited mileage policy and reporting your reading when you renew!

Yes - I have a spare 1504 speedo in perfect working order - just right for 948 engine. Had it for sale at Bridge of Allan event two weeks ago - £8. Still available. Mileage is easily adjusted to whatever you want!

Hi everyone,

Just wondered if anyone has seen this Smiths speedo before and could perhaps tell me what car it came from???

Its brand new and in its original BMC Smith box with 00001 miles.
Thought it maybe off a mini but after looking online it doesnt look like it. Probably from a British car though, and something that only goes up to 90 mph...
The part number is SN 8605/14
I didnt know what it comes from and neither did the bloke I got it off. Have you seen one before?
As far as I can make out it should have a clock in the bottom that is missing as on the Smiths box it says " Speedometer less Clock" next to the part number.
