Oil Leak - Gearbox

Post by JoeJackson »

Dear All

I have a 1963 old english white cabriolet. I have noticed today that oil is leaking from the recently fitted gearbox.

The oil appears to be coming from the end of the gearbox, at the junction with the drive shaft. The junction of engine and gearbox appear to be clean.

Does anyone have any idea where and why the oil may be discharging from this area?

Regards

If you are sure that the oil is coming from this place and not being blown there from your engine, then it may be that your gearbox output shaft oil seal is worn.

I had the same problem with a rebuilt box some time ago.
the rear oil seal is readily available and is tapped into
position and stuck with some setting Hermetite or similar.
Unfortunately,of course, you have to remove the prop shaft
to do it.

You also may find the tailshaft bush or the sliding joint on the propshaft are worn. Unfortunately you need to strip the gearbox to change it.
