lengths of carpet needed to make own van carpet set

Post by wibble_puppy »

ello all - especially LCV types 8)

have just spent the evening laying out the constituent parts of my van's old carpet set so as to see what length of carpet might be needed if I were to order it in one big sheet and make up the carpet sections myself.

For info, in case anyone else might find this useful:

If the carpet is 107cm wide, you will need a 260cm length
If the carpet is 140cm wide, you will need a 2 metre length.

I have photos of the way to lay the pieces out, if anyone wants to see 'em. They take account of possible nap direction in the carpet you are using.

Caveat: I haven't actually put this into practice yet......

Just for your info when making own carpets don't use household as it tends to rot due to not being rubber backed. Cut sill sections & gearbox section first then main mats. Gearbox is hardest to cut due to needing darts to shape around curves. Try to get main sections bound as they will last longer and not fray, place sound proofing under main sections to level up sill & gearbox and create a level surface for main sections  Hope that's some help if needed.

Am confused by this - ESM sell hessian-backed carpet, and Woolies sell carpets backed variously with latex, rubber, hessian and "synthetic". These are reputable suppliers - would they really be selling something which is liable to rot? :-?

Suppliers sell cars that rot so why not carpet! Stay away from the hessian It'll rot in the end.Moisture can be drawn in like a sponge unlike the others. Rubber backed probalbly the best for your needs.......The actual best is Wilton, its very pliable and when folded you can't see each indvidual cord. Used a lot in E types etc and soon in my mog.

when i bought my trav it had household green carpet, which smelt so bad and had rotted in sections! the rest of the car wasnt too bad (ie: no leaks anywere that would have speeded it up), and im told that the previous owner had replaced the original carpet with the household, so it had got to that state within 5 years!
