Behold! The six-month old pully which broke into 1000 bits..

Post by Multiphonikks »

Okay. So I am slightly exaggerating.

Thanks to my friend John and his fantastic expensive drool-worthy photographic set-up here's some intimate photos of the ex pully. See, it is no more.

Pay special attention to the spot welds. Yes, that's 1mm diameter!

Oh, and the fractures. I'm glad the thing didn't fall apart any more!

Yup - oh and it's not finished uploading yet, so have another look in a ten or so... There's over 30 photos.

P.S. how are you getting on for Sunday?

P.P.S. It's all uploaded now. Look in horror...

Yup :) You're welcome to tag along with the bristol crowd unless it's going to be too much of a journey from Bristol given things at the moment?

ahhh, well, just think of us pottering along the M4 as you wizz along in first class luxury *ducks and runs*... :D

:)

Besides, you can read/use a laptop while being on the train :D

Dragging it back to the original topic, what do people think the failure was caused by then?

I'd say the spot welds letting go and allowing the belt to split the two halves of the pulley, setting up odd vibrations which caused the fracturing. It's only a guess, mind - I'm no metallurgist. :(

If you've got the strength to carry a laptop/Harry Potter book as well as Onne's stuff which was delivered here :D

Difficult to see, but looks like some sort of crack spliting out from a rivet ( Been there a while with that corrosion under there) then after so long the whole thing appears to have gone quite quickly out to edge.

Seems weird that almost every rivet is showing cracking. Looks like it was doomed even if that rivet had held any longer.

As a guess they will say you did it up too tight BUT no way should that do that after only 6 months and short of you bracing the alternator with a scaffold tube you couldn't break it that way.especially as the welds appear to have held around the other rivets.

If you look at the fracture edges you should see a variation from rusty to clean metal which would give a gauge as to how long the break took.

I'm a bit rusty (no pun intended) on fracture analysis (it's been a while since I did it at Uni) but something is odd that a comlplete set of rivets fail at the same time. I wonder if it was out of balance?

Hi Paul, well we know the engine is on it's last legs, but there doesn't seem to be that much vibration from the crank.

As for the belt - yeah - it wasn't overdone that tight - I may be a strong lass but I'm not THAT strong (in fact, I always get PyoorKate to help me tighten the belts!)

Andrew, as Onne is coming to the rally and staying with us, wouldn't it make more sense for someone to pop over to yours on the saturday?

Hello Nikki,

this may be too late, but other BMC (as was) models such as the Sprite use a solid pulley that will fit and is a lot more durable.

Multi - They're very welcome, but I won't be here unless it's early in the morning. At the mo, it's only a steering wheel anyway, so I'll cope so far. :D I know there's another parcel expected, but I don't know what's in it :)

PS ...and sorry Cam - they'll be safe here - unless I nick the rad...

Looks like it was made from the tins John West rejects. Do you have a replacement ? If not I think I can give you one (a genuine old one) for the postage cost. But it's a good chance to fit a crank damper instead !
And DO tell us - who was the supplier of this piece of cr@p ?
