Head Gasket Blowing

Post by wanderinstar »

A while ago my head gasket blew between 3 - 4. Changed head gasket, no problems. Later on had to change head for different reason. Now head gasket blown again between 3 - 4. Any ideas why it should go twice, with different heads [ rules out warped head ] [ does block face warp??? ]
Would competition gasket be any good?
Ian.

Sadly yes it could be the block Ian. You need to remove all the studs - clean it off carefully, and then check with a straight edge. Not sure if there is a 'competition' head gasket these days for the small bore engines. Try to get a copper faced gasket for a 998 Mini, and smear the faces thinly with grease - and put good thick washers under the head nuts and tighten them progressively to 45 ft.lbs with oil on the threads. Remember to re-tighten after taking it out for a test drive.
