Could someone please confirm that there should only be one outlet on the brake master cylinder? I've got 1 pipe running to a divider in the engine bay, splitting front and rear. Is this right?
Every picture I've seen of the system implies to me that there should be 2 outlets.... I'm slightly confused!
Cheers
Jim
The standard would be to have one pipe from the M/c exiting the chassis leg near the gearbox mounting and then going forward to a splitter for front left and front right and brake light switch. A second pipe runs straight out the back of the M/c and exists the chassis leg through the cross member heading to the back axle. However, if you have a servo acting on all brakes or other modifications then it would be quite normal for the rear going pipe to be blanked off, and just a single pipe coming forward to a splitter.
What year and model is the car, and does it have any modifications?
The is a single outlet at the rear of the master cylinder.
Screwed into this is a hollow 'bolt' and a banjo connection.
One brake pipe screws into the rear of the hollow 'bolt' and continues backwards and emerges through the crossmember at the back of the chassis leg. It goes to the rear brake cylinders.
A second brake pipe screws into the banjo connection and emerges from the side of the chassis leg. It bends forward and over the top of the gearbox support bracket and then goes to the front brake cylinders.
Just picking up on comments from newaget and myself, plus your original question.... The master cylinder itself will have only outlet, on the rear end. A banjo arrangement, similar to that on the rear brake cylinders, allows one pipe to come sideways through the chassis leg and another to go straight back. Hope that clarifies everything for you.
Cheers chaps,
I suspect my system has been bodged (like the rest of car - not bitter!!). It apparently has a 'new' master cylinder though I've just brought a new one and it looks nothing like the one I removed!
Never mind, good job I did't pay much for it then...
It should be simple enough to check. Have you a brake pipe
emerging from INSIDE the drivers side front chassis leg through the centre cross-member and going on to the
rear brake flexible pipe or does your pipe to the rear flexible pipe
appear OUTSIDE the front chassis leg from a 3way brake pipe
junction? If the latter then this would normally be done when
a servo unit has been installed.
My system uses the 3 way junction which has been placed in the engie bay. I think I'll leave it as it is with the pipe leaving the chassis leg at 1 point through the inside.
Thanks for the clarification.
