Assuming the tick-over is not too slow - it seems the clutch is dragging. Could be it is moving too far - how much free-play have you at the pedal ? If the clutch is actually releasing at say 2 " movement - and you are pushing it down 4" - then there will be an intolerable load on the engine. Either adjust to give more free play - or don't press the clutch down so far ! It could also be a sign that the thrust washers in the engine are badly worn and the crank shaft is moving forwards so much it is causing a drag. Try observing the crank pulley (watch out for the fan) while someone else presses the clutch - if it moves forward more than a very few thou this could be it.
