brake help needed

I'm changing a leaking rear wheel cylinder on my '71 van.
How do you remove the cylinder??
It's loose and looks like it's fractions away from coming out but, no matter what I try I cannot get it past the hub!!
Do I need to unbolt the backing plate to achieve the angle at which the cylinder will come out??

Any help greatly appreciated

theyb are a bit tricky but they will come out

got it out eventually! new one was hard to get in too!

Is there not a 'flat' on the hub which makes it a bit easier to come out ? Ages (ie 40 years) since I did one - maybe I just pulled the hub - it comes away easily.

medium sized hammer - works every time on the rear cylinders ;-) (no need to remove hubs etc..)

Although I've not done it, I get the impression that it's one of these jobs where you spend hours wiggling it and it won't come out. You go away, come back, do some sort of complicated cursory wiggle and you're left with it in your hand going "but why didn't it come out the first time?!" (at least, that seems to be a summary of what's happened every time someones asked

).

Put it in at a slight angle (ensure the opening is free of rust and gunk) and it normally only needs a gentle tap.
