Hi guys, I'm trying to discover what 1275 engine (A or A+) I have in order to work out what cam i need (peg drive/slot drive...)

I have searched the forum B4 asking and note that my 1275 has the oil pump in the same place as CAM's:

Does this mean its an A+ engine from an Ital - with a peg drive?

And if so, I think bmcecosse mentioned that the engine DOES NOT need removing to change the camshaft - is this correct?

Eh? ALL A series engines have the oil pump in the same place - it's on the back end of the camshaft. If it's an Ital A+ engine - then it will be a peg drive. However - this is no help - because when you pull the cam out all the followers will fall down into the sump !! If you want to change the cam without turning the engine (or the whole car!) upside down, you will need to devise a way of holding the followers up while you pull the cam out. I have thought this 'might' be possible using powerful magnets on sticks - you would 8 of them of course.
If the engine were a 948/1098 and you KNEW it had a peg drive pump (never stanadard on these engines) then of course the followers are accessible through the side covers and can be taken out before pulling the cam. Sadly - this is not possible with the 1275.

Ah right - that clears things up a little. Either way it's engine out!

But that doesn't clear up the a/a+ question because Ive completely confused the issue by typing "pump" rather than "filter" :oops:

Its the oil filter at the back/bottom that i believe suggests its an A+ but I'm not 100%?

If your distributor has a 'fork' holding it in with a bolt going into the block then it's an A+. If the distributor is held in by a pinch bolt bracket then it's A series.

If in doubt, take a piccy of the mounting and we'll tell you.

I believe also that all A+ engines have vertical and horizontal raised casting lines to the lower part of the block. the A engines (including the 1098) don't.
Older and more confused than I could ever imagine possible.

I take it that you mean the stiffening webs when you say casting lines Pete, as this is an identifier of the 'a' plus.

Great, thanks! Clean for the time being :D. And cheers for showing me the image thing too... makes life a bit easier.

So does that mean it will have a peg drive or is that dependant on what the garage have done to it when they installed it?

No probs. :D

If it's an Ital A+ (as bmcecosse stated) it should be a peg drive cam & oil pump.

I was considering the kent cams fast road - 266. Mainly because my girlfriend also drives the car + its pretty much 80% city driving so didn't want to go much further.

that and the morspeed stage 3 head shoud give me a boost - any ideas how much? Already got stage 1 kit with HIF44 carb thanks to yours and Cams advice.

Much less expensive cam would be the MG Metro - which has 252 inlet timing and 268 exhaust timing - usually £10/15 on ebay. Was developed by Rover to give excellent torque with good fuel consumption.

ello, I heard that these are comparable to the kent cams 256? Do these appear regularly coz I do check for stuff like this on ebay every day and never seem to find one - maybe searching for the wrong thing!

Search under MG and again under Mini Camshaft. Must admit - since I started 'suggesting' the MG cam on the Mini forums they seem to have become very scarce !!
