Petrol Smell

Hi,

My '64 Moggy has a petrol smell but only after filling up with petrol!
After a few (15-20) miles the smell goes away.

The main smell seems to be in the boot area, however when driving it is quite pungent in the front especially on the passenger side (so my gf says!). The smell also appears when parked so airing is necessary before starting.

There are no damp patches on the tank (that i have found) or any other evidence of leakage.

I have tried replacing the the tubing between the filler cap and tank to no effect.

Any ideas?

Mine does that also. But after driving a lot of old cars I just sort of get used to it.

Has yours just started doing this?

What condition are the bumper bar rubbers in as they are responsible for letting smells and fumes in if they are perished with age.

Glad someone asked this.

Mine smells of petrol too but usually only after hard cornering.
It may sound 'hooligan-ish' but I often swing the back end out on the minor when taking it around the local twisties. (the joys of RWD)
Its almost like the fuels being thrown out somewhere but I can't see where.

Is it a known problem under hard cornering? Carb/fuel pump perhaps?

There is a piece of tubing connecting the filler pipe to the top of the tank
this may have gone porous with age or the jubilee type clips may need
tightening up. The fact that you get the smell on a FULL tank or on
hard cornering suggests that the petrol is leaking from this pipe

hi eveyone i had the same problem and it was petrol leaking out of the sender seal on top of the tank and then going back in try a new seal it work for me

Well, I've finaly got to the bottom of my problem - its a leaky carb!

Fuel seems to be either leaking from the underside of the main body - where there's a large sprung nut (needle adjustment maybe??) - or from the float chamber.
Either way there's fuel all over the small clear pipe that links the carb and chamber together.

I'm going to swap the carb over with one from my old 'dead' engine and see if that helps.

The' small clear pipe' on the carb is secured to the bottom of the
float chamber by a nut. try tightening this nut gently. If the leak
is due to a worn float chamber needle then the fuel will leak from
the TOP of the float chamber. If this is the case then buy a needle
and seating kit, do not change only one item.
