Horn Push keeps popping out

Post by KWR56 »

1967 Morris Traveller. The horn push on later models is just a friction fit (no retaining screw) and mine kept popping out, even when in the garage over night. I tried adding some making tape to the sides to make it a tighter fit, bit that didn't work. After months of frustration, I changed the steering wheel and horn push, but that did did the same. A few weeks ago I purchased and fitted a 15" Mountney wheel complete with boss and horn push. To my annoyance, this does exactly the same. Every time I get into the car I find the horn push on the drivers seat, or under it.
I've concluded that the the spring on the steering column must be too strong. Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so, how did you resolve it?

I thought it was held in with a barbed clip.

As John says, the later s5 Horn has little clips around it.
They weren't separate in the original parts book, they came fitted to the outer ring.

I think there was a problem with the new clips a while ago...with the holding teeth pointing the wrong way.(?)

They are out of stock anyway.

It's a very common problem with the later horn push and I was told by somebody who worked for BMC that they popped out on brand new cars. It is a particular problem in hot weather when the metal inner of the steering wheel expands but it also happens when there is wear on the metal inner collar of the steering wheel where the barbed clips "bite".

There are some things you can try. You can carefully bend the barbed clips with fine needle nose pliers so that they catch better; you can rotate the horn push slightly so that the clips catch on an area that is less worn (but this means the M logo won't be absolutely straight at road wheels pointing dead straight) or you can use a bit of paper, folded if necessary to jam the horn push in. Be careful as the original horn pushes are very brittle. Lastly, you can make a tiny metal shim to push the clips out further.
