Wipers

Hi all,can anyone explain how to remove the wiper motor cable,I have replaced the motor which works fine ,but when I connect the end of the cable to the the arm of the motor it just seizes.once I take it back off again the motor turns as usual.i can only think the cable has seized somewhere between the motor and the wiper arms. Any help please thanks.

It depends what age of Minor you have.

Assuming a later Minor 1000 with the wiper motor in the engine bay:

1) Remove both wiper arms from the spindles
2) Disconnect the electrical connections from the wiper motor. Make a careful note or take a photograph of what goes where.
3) Undo the lid of gearbox area of the wiper motor (4 BA hex head machine screws)
4) Remove c-clip from self-parking copper contact and remove self-parking contact.
5) Lift off crank
6) Withdraw the wiper rack (cable) from the Bundy tube. This is very messy and there will be grease everywhere.

If the rack with not come out it is likely that one of the wiper wheel boxes has seized. In this case, if you know which of the 2 wheel boxes has seized, remove that side glovebox and you can access the wheel box. Remove the backplate of the wheel box and you can then remove the wiper rack. If you don't know which wheel box is seized, remove both gloveboxes for access to both wheel boxes.

Modern wheel boxes are the wrong sweep angle (long threads on this forum about this) and so if you have a totally seized wheel box you will need to track down either a new old stock or good second replacement.

With regards to my wiper problem,it transpires that the cable has seized in the outer sheath and no amount of oil,pulling ,pushing or general violence will get the cable out. Have any of you lovely people got the whole cable and outer sheath available to buy off you as I have got everything out and disconnected and wiper boxes all nicely greased up ready to go. Cheers

If you have to 'phone around trying to obtain one just be aware that there are 2 completely different set-ups on the Minor 1000 depending on whether your wipers follow each other in tandem (1964 models onwards) or meet each other in the centre (pre 1964 upgrade).
I'd be surprised if your rack assembly could not be repaired unless the car has been unused for many years. Generally once you have removed the whole lot, it is possible to dismantle it all and clean then lubricate all the components.
