Your photos show the correct position Bill.
I suppose the parts book just shows what the parts look like. Not the position.

The only picture I can find in my photos. It doesn't show the whole slip ring but it does show that the castellations must be upwards.

For confirmation there are two features that control the orientation. First, the split insulator under the slip ring can it be assembled either way? It probably can since it's a round hole in the steering column. The next is the controlling feature. The contact that rides on the slip ring must touch the solid portion of the slip ring. It's location is govern by the location of the steering column position which has variability. However, with self canceling turn indicator switch everything must be located fairly precisely to engage the square headed bolt to cancel the turn. Holding the turn indicator switch up to the column such that it engages the square headed bolt, the relation of the spring contact and the hole in the side of the column will confirm which way everything needs to be assembled.

Looking at this as an outsider, since a SII is totally different, what purpose does the castellation have?
Presumably to clip/hold itself or something else in place.
It would be unusual for the parts catalogue to show something 180 deg reversed :-?

Is it something where fitting it incorrectly is just easier, so past dismantlers end up refitting it upside down a bit like people incorrectly fitting MC Bolts .... :-?

Its a square hole in the column outer but yes either way is possible.
None of the rest is relevant to the question

Berni, the castellated end clips into a groove in the two piece plastic sleeve below and locates the slip ring. I have reassembled it with castellated upwards which is how it was when I stripped it to renew the top bush. Everything works as it did before so I believe the parts illustration is in the wrong orientation. Not the 1st error we have seen. Or either way up works
It was only when looking for the E clip I looked at the parts illustration which caused the doubt.

I agree it goes castellations up. I doubt it would fit or work up-side down.

Stephen in the picture you posted the indicator cancel stud has a rounded tip. Mine is like the picture below(no pic of mine) it has a square head. Need to adjust mine as not self canceling since reassembled. But wondered if yours is standard or modified?

Having just removed the steering wheel etc. to lubricate the felt "bushes", this thread prompted me, the indicator switch cancelling stud has a domed head exactly like in Stephen's picture.
The slip ring castellations are uppermost.
I have a spare steering column on which there is also a domed cancelling stud. Something different with that spare is the slip ring has no castellations.
Early '62 car and I have no reason to think the steering column isn't the original.

Ah yes, I forgot that picture is useful for the felt bushes as well. You can see in my picture that in my case, the felt bushes "plumped up" very well with a few feedings of oil. The cancelling stud has a domed head yes but below the domed head there is a square to adjust how far the stud protrudes from the column.

Here are two studs from my spares cache. I would have (not of!) thought a domed head is more mechanically sympathetic to the square only version.

The felt certainly did absorb a large amount of oil. As suggested, I used 3 in 1 which eventually "leaked" down to the lower felt.

Mine is late 62 and is square, interesting the changes, parts bin build  its worked for 4 years of my ownership so don't think the square head is an issue, just noticed a difference in pics.
Just need to adjust it after refitting the outer column.
PS, the mini plastic top bush eliminated the free play completely :tu1:
