Re: Flywheel ?
Looks like some sort of lightweight 'performance' flywheel, perhaps Phil may recognise it...

Re: Flywheel ?
That is a lightened Mini flywheel similar to the one in the attached link.

Re: Flywheel ?
Ah thanks for your knowledge, I think i might replace it with a more standard one, yes it’s on a Mini, however I was confident knowledgeable folk within the forum could cope with a non Minor item and indeed did, thank you. Incidentally I can’t get the thing off !!

Re: Flywheel ?
Get tension on your puller then hit the back of the flywheel through the starter hole with brass drift and lump hammer.
Rotate to different position and repeat. Keep checking puller tension between hits.

Re: Flywheel ?
Bill, I was thinking I should perhaps use a longer bar for leverage, I have such a bar with a 3/4” square but my 24mm socket is only 1/2” drive. Your method gives me another option ! Thanks for that. Apparently this engine has been rebuilt in the past to quite a wild specification, not too friendly for the road, so until I strip it I won’t know what it needs to make things more agreeable and of course with a Mini unless the flywheel is removed not much else can be stripped.

Re: Flywheel ?
If you have access to an impact gun, to tighten the puller it works better than just tightening with a socket bar. Not done one for years but remember them being very tight. Be carful when it goes they can come off suddenly, keep your self to one side

Re: Flywheel ?
Tried the hitting from behind method but still refuses to move, hit it pretty hard, don’t want to go too far. I haven’t got an impact wrench, that is another thought. Yes Bill, I’m a bit worried when it does go, I’ll stand clear ! I also need find a better way to lock the flywheel from turning. If it was a Minor I could wedge the crankshaft. I really didn’t expect this degree of difficulty.

Re: Flywheel ?
Les, I see you are in Kent but that is a big county. I am on the southern edge of London. I have a Mini flywheel locking tool that I bought in error years ago (it doesn't work on a Minor). It uses the starter motor bolt holes. You can have it if you want it!

You could try hitting the centre hub on side with your with drift.les wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2026 10:39 am Tried the hitting from behind method but still refuses to move, hit it pretty hard, don’t want to go too far. Its on a taper so the shock will help, bit like a ball joint.
Big screw driver in ring gear against starter apature but probably need assistant to hold while you tighten puller to get some good tension.

Very kind offer Stephen, thank you I’m in the Bexley/Dartford area, I have a couple of ideas to try but your device would be nice, where are you.
Bill, thanks again, another thing to try,

Re: Flywheel ?
The Classic Mini flywheel locking tool does not have to have both bolts engaged to lock the flywheel on Minor and to that end it works very well in locking the flywheel. Just remember to put the bolt into the leading end of the tool/rear engine plate that you do not want the engine to turn in. It helps to keep the tool engaged with the flywheel.
I have and use the Classic Mini flywheel locking tool when I require the crankshaft/flywheel to remain static. Way back it was the only proper tool available. There is a fabricated Minor flywheel locking tool for sale on 'e' bay but it looks a bit fragile to me. I do have one of the large Sykes Pickavant flywheel locking tools but the Mini tool is so much easier to use.
Back to the tight flywheel - tighten the removal tool as much as you can - use a tube on the socket 'T' bar if required and leave. As soon as you turn your back it will pop off. Brings back memories of working on Classic Mini's way back in the late 1960s replacing idler gears under warranty. At least Les you have a decent quality flywheel puller not a weedy thing like some advertised.

Re: Flywheel ?
Thanks Phil, yes it’s been under tension overnight (yesterday) I was expecting/ hoping it would go bang and wake me up but I had a good nights sleep !! Incidentally that flywheel, apparently is not recommended for road use.

Re: Flywheel ?
Am I right in thinking at least two bolts still have locking tabs in place. An interesting way to try to remove, if that is the case?

Re: Flywheel ?
You are not right the flywheel is on the taper at centre of puller with the fixing removed. Its a minioliver90owner wrote: ↑Mon Aug 24, 2026 9:51 pm Am I right in thinking at least two bolts still have locking tabs in place. An interesting way to try to remove, if that is the case?

Re: Flywheel ?
Next step try striking the puller bolt whilst under full tension to shock it, if that doesn't work you may need heat on flywheel hub, it's likely been fitted with loctite and the heat will help brake its hold.

Re: Flywheel ?
And when the classic Mini first came out there were numerous complaints about the flywheel coming loose.
One of the reasons the taper on the end of the crankshaft is so shallow is to reduce the chances of the flywheel coming loose but in this case some chance.
