Thank you Stephen.

Here is an update.
Firstly my husband tried to remove the dynamo so that we could search for serial numbers and possibly oil the ball bearings. However it wouldn't come off as he couldn't get to the lower nut underneath it.
We have decided to book her in to be looked at at a local classic car garage near us on July 1st.
Will report back on this.

Looking at the Parts lists, the fitting of the C40 was introduced before the 1098cc, but you need detailed engine numbers to work out when that was ....
Plus it was the default spare part once it had been introduced..

Been blacklisted while at another ISP address, so now posting what I would have posted a couple of days, or so, ago.

Nooo. If the battery voltage was THAT low, the starter motor would not work very well!

Ah, but in a case like that, the starting handle is the obvious solution.......and then, expect trouble out on the road, especially if using lights, wipers, indicators etc. There is clearly a problem with the charging system, whether it be dynamo or control box. It will be interesting to find out more, after this car has been examined by the garage mentioned by Maddie.

Hi there

Yes, it will be interesting.

I'm not used to any of this trouble with Tilley, nothing has ever gone wrong with her, she has always been so reliable. Well, apart from the one time when I was out in her and it began to rain so I flicked on the wiper switch (dont you just love the cute little wiper switch!) Think you flick it or do you pull it? can't remember now its so long since I've done that. Anyway, after only a couple of swishes back and forth the drivers side wiper flew off!! and bounced down the road ha! ha! Well, I actually wasn't laughing at the time I was horrified. It did cross my mind to see if I could retrieve it but a car then went past me and I thought yep its been squashed! I had to abandon my journey and limp slowly back home in heavy rain luckily for me it was a quiet Sunday morning and I wasn't too far away.

They need to be driven though and she hasn't been for quite some time.so I should not have been so nieve as to expect her to just start first time and hey presto here we go again the open road!
I actually feel guilty of neglect you know. I just want her sorted asap.
Anyway now another topic has arisen.
Stay tuned...! I'm not actually sure which catergory it comes into so will have a look at that tomorrow.

Hi everyone

I've been so busy so apologies for taking ages to update you regarding what I earlier described as a different issue with Tilley especially after asking you all to stay tuned I actually forgot that I had said that! Also I can't remember now what it was atm im sure it will come back to me :o
Anyway Tilley is back after her trip to the garage.
The mechanic said he would just order a new dynamo as the noisy one would most probably have a damaged casing anyway.
I asked if I could have my original one back, so I have it in a box and going to check it against the serial numbers kindly provided by geoberni.
Mechanic also said the exhaust was blowing and so he would need to investigate why.
I have the work sheet at home so in my next post later today I will list what he did.

Bye for now

Work sheet

Supply and fit dynamo swap over existing pulleys and fan.
Supply and fit new dynamo belt and adjust
Clean all contacts on coil and control box
Carry out ignition service to include points, condensor, cap and rotor and new spark plugs of correct type.and new ignition leads
Remove exhaust manifold and replace exhaust manifold gasket and re seal exhaust at trumpet.
Replace rocker cover gasket as leaking
Replace tappet chest seals and gaskets as leaking and easily accessible at the time exhaust was removed.

Is it just me being nieve by simply expecting my dynamo to be replaced and the back firing issue to be s fairly simple fix?
Or would this be in line with a belts and braces approach?

Would just be interesting to know your thoughts.

It seems entirely reasonable. Backfiring could be caused by a weak fuel/air mixture due to a leaking manifold gasket and/or poor condition of ignition components. You would not change a dynamo and not fit a new belt if the old one was tatty. The dynamo and control box are part of a system and so cleaning the control box contacts is not just sensible but essential. As for the oil leaks, the rocker cover gasket takes moments and if the tappet chest cover gaskets were also leaking it is entirely logical to change them when the exhaust is out of the way.

Seems like a good mechanic to me! Were you upset that there was work done you weren't expecting?

Hi Stephen

Ok thank you.

I was more upset that we weren't informed by them that they only accept bank transfer or cash as payment.
We only found this out after they presented us with the bill.
I would never have used them if I had known this in advance. There is nothing stating this on their website, it was written in small writing at the bottom of a piece of A4 on their notice board in the office, we only know this as we looked for it when we arrived to pick up the car. Who looks at that when you are in a small cramped office with lots of things pinned to the wall and you are there to discuss work and handing over the car it was clearly kept from us.
This means we have no comeback if we have any subsequent issues with the parts or the workmanship. It gave me a very uneasy feeling as these days you expect to be able to pay by debit or credit card and at the very least for this to be transparent before the work begins. Also he refused to provide an itemised invoice as I asked for this in light of the bank transfer issue (as this can actually form some kind of guarantee and is better than nothing!) saying he doesn't do that so we only had an invoice with with the total of works and the vat.
This is in contravention of the consumer rights act 2015 which clearly states that the customer must be provided with this if they request it and that the customer should be provided with an alternative debit or credit card payment method if they were not aware that bank transfer or cash were going to be the only accepted forms of payment.
Needless to say we won't be using them again.

I am pleased that you think the work carried out seems reasonable as I began to mis-trust this man very quickly!

Hmm. I have a business account for a very small amount of private business that I do. It all depends on the size of the business. There are significant costs involved in being able to accept debit and credit cards. If they are accepted, the costs need to passed on to the customer so the prices are higher. You know what work they did and how much it cost. If there were serious problems you could still use the small claims court couldn't you? it sounds like an old school small business. If they are good at what they do I wouldn't worry about it personally.

We are at the stage where many "one-man band" mechanics are retiring or have already retired so the number of mechanics who can work on old cars like ours is reducing all the time. It is either going to be a small business/sole trader or one of the big classic car specialists and they charge top whack prices. It's entirely up to you what you decide.

I'm rather surprised at your attitude to the garage who seem to have provided you with a good service. Our 2 local garages do not accept card payments either but customers can pay by Bank transfer or cash. This doesn't seem to cause any problems. I would never assume that a small business would accept card payment - which will cost them money. The business that I use still happily provide a warranty on their work and parts supplied. Their warranty has nothing to do with the payment method used. Lots of people don't use cards. I realise that card payment does provide some additional protection but that would only be necessary as a last resort surely? A certain amount of trust has to exist both ways and garages prepared to work on these old cars are becoming hard to find. If they have done a good job at a reasonable cost, why would you not use them again?
In my experience, larger garages with all the bells and whistles charge a lot more.

Hi Stephen

I suppose my point is that it was the lack of transparency. It just felt underhand to me to only be informed of this once we had been placed a compromising position.

I would actually not mind paying a little extra on my bil in exchange for easier routes of protecting my money other than having to go through the small claims court.

Obviously this was the first time we had taken our car to this company so this was a large leap of faith on our part.

There is a radio phone in on LBC radio that airs every Friday and Saturday evening from 9 until 10pm. Friday night is the consumer hour and the presenter is Dean Dunham a consumer lawyer of some repute.
Dean's mantra (and indeed he can get very disappointed with people if they haven't listened to him) is never pay a trades person via bank transfer or cash as you then waive your right to claiming your money back via section 75 if you pay by credit card or charge back if you pay by direct debit. Should These are fast easy routes to being refunded should anything go wrong.
It is very good advice and that is why I simply don't deal with anyone that doesn't offer their customers this choice.

My error was in assuming that those payment methods would have been available to us as other similar sized garages offer it. Indeed I rang one recently as we need to be able to go to one in the future and they are just a small 2 man band that do take credit/debit cards. Thankfully they are actually more local to us.

The moral of the story is never assume!!!

Well, the main thing after all the dust has settled - is the car running OK now?

Why do you have so much mistrust in your repairer? You are already thinking ahead about getting your money back before you know the repair was done correctly. As you stated you could not do the job yourselves so needed a garage to carry out the job.
If you don't trust the repairer why take it there? Not all small garages are out to rip you off
Not everyone has a credit card.
