Odd square hole in passenger side floor

Hi,
I have an odd square hole in my passenger side floor, below the hole for oiling the steering rack, next to the top of the gearbox tunnel cover. See images below:

My car is a 1954 Series 2, if that helps anyone.
I don't remember there being a rubber grommet sealing it but it must have had something at some point to stop the wet getting in, as it opens just above the passenger side steering rack gaiter.
Does anyone know what this was for and where I can get a rubber grommet to seal it back up?

The hole is for the clutch pedal when the car is L/H drive. It should have a rubber bung or tar paper covering it.

Thankyou both for solving that little mystery, it's always good to know these things.
I suspect then that I shall have to make my own blanking rubber (nothing on ESM or Moss sites that I can see).

I am not absolutely positive on this but I think my car just has tape over the hole (original tape) similar to what is used in the doors. I would be inclined just to use a bit of duct tape. It's strong and waterproof.

I have just used a small alloy plate secured by two screws.

This is what it looks like on my 1969 car. Whatever is over the hole is hard. It seems like it might be a little patch of fibreglass or it might be metal but I'd need to find a magnet to prove it. Or it might be the tar tape Phil mentioned.

Mine has a rubber grommet. Other solutions are available.

This is what it looks like on my 1969 car.

I've a feeling that might be the 'tar paper' that Phil mentioned above. If so I would expect it to be, as you found, rock hard (set tar).
I also have a feeling that this might be why mine is missing, as, seeing this, I now have a vague recollection of scraping something like it off, when I was stripping the car for restoration.
I would have just regarded it as yet another 'bodge', so the then owner could get it a (dodgy) MOT and strip the original registration off her, which is what he went on to do........
Ooops! I should have left that then......

Never mind, Mike, its a nice easy fix, and whatever you do, it won't be visible with the carpets back down
