Gearbox Filler Plug Stripped

Post by mogdobz »

Well, sausage fingers here got his hands on the gearbox filler plug. Frankly I couldn't tell you if it was already stripped and didn't notice before, but it's definitely not going back in straight. Oops. It *is* in there, and it's secure. Consequently wondering two things:
1) Do I need to be very worried? I'm rationalising that it's just the filler plug and if it stays in and stops oil sloshing out then it's still doing its job.
2) Actual repairs -- if one happened to have unlimited money/time, presumably this would involve drilling a new (slightly larger) thread?
Thanks all! Thinking of ways to apologise to the car.

If you undo it and do it up a few times in the future, it would probably eventually strip. Worry ? I would be concerned, some wouldn’t.

It is a straight thread with a taper thread plug so I doubt if the whole thread is stripped. I would replace the taper plug with a straight plug with head.
If you decide to put a tap down the thread smear the tap in grease to catch any alloy produced. Do not drop the tap into the gearbox.
