Fuel pump connections

Post by Nax »

1971 2 door saloon
Just checking through the wiring in the engine bay and I noticed the fuel pump is wired to the wiper motor
while the fuel pump white wire has been taped off, So I Checked it with a bulb and its permanently live.
My thinking is that the previous owner has connected it wrong at the ignition switch or fuse box and then later
wired the fuel pump to the wiper motor as an easy fix.
I don,t want to leave it like this in case a fuse blows and the pump stops.
Your advise would be appreciated
Thanks in advance

:o
The curse of the Past Owner.....

People do all manner of strange things, including with Electrics.
The Fuel Pump, as with the Ign Coil, is fed direct from the Live side of the fuse with the White inputs.
There should be 3 White Wires at the fuse with the Green outputs.
One White is the feed from the Ign Sw, the other two are the un-fused feeds to the aforementioned Pup and Coil/Points.

Shouldn't be hard to trace back.... says I, without knowing what spaghetti might be behind your dash....

So is there a permanent live at the fuse box because the white pump wire is live even with the ignition off ?

That fuse box looks rather new compared to the condition of the wiring. :-?
As a educated guess, the PO who caused your earlier wiring issues had been bu**ering around here too.
The 3 White wires should all be together on one fuse, just as I showed you on the wiring diagram earlier.

You have one White Wire that is connected to the Brown wire on the other fuse. DOT DOT DOT That's just a dramatic emphasis of '...'
No wonder the white is permanently live, that Brown is directly fed by the battery.

Pull that White wire off from beside the Brown Wire.
Does it get ride of the live White at the Pump? I'm guessing it will.
If so, then that is the wire for the Pump.
Connect that White to one of the vacant terminals under where the other 2 White Wires are all should be correct.

While where's looking at this, do you know where that Red Wire is going?
Always a good idea for you to know such things about your car.

Thanks for coming back and closing the story, it's so frustrating to give people advice and then you never hear what the outcome was.
