Silencer in the middle.

Post by Michiel »

Does anybody know why the silencer is in the middle of the exhaust pipe and not at the end? Would like to replace it to the rear.

I would think its space between the fuel tank and spring, we have one of sport exhausts which has a second smaller silencer at the back, even that is a tight squezee though.

Because that's the only place it'll fit; sometimes you just have to acknowledge that designers often do thing for the most basic of reasons

One of the several exhaust/silencer systems fitted to my Minor was from a MG Midget with the silencer at the rear. The exhaust pipe passed under the rear axle which never caused any problems. The Midget front pipe was cut short to connect up with the Minor exhaust just in front of the original Minor silencer. The MG exhaust supposedly gave a extra few bhp as it was less restricted.

Back then (50 years ago) it was the exhaust/silencer to go for for small block (948cc) 'A' Series engines. It sounded great and It appears to have given a little bit of power and as they say every little helps.
