I’ve been having more issues with ‘Timed out’ notifications, the message board seems ok one minute and hopeless the next. Ok now, hence the post. Imagine if this unreliability was present on NASA voyages to the moon. We’d never see the crew again, drifting aimlessly in space. Wonder what computer system they have.

All recent problems on Messageboard relate to sustained attack from offshore. As discussed elsewhere, I have been battling that. Now mostly resolved with just a couple of residual issues. On Saturday, Committee approved expenditure for additional security measures that should hopefully put an end to the problem.

As regards original moon landings, the computing power was distinctly limited, but my understanding is that three separate machines performed the same calculations. If there was a different answer from one, then the result used was the "majority vote" from the other two as it meant that the first had developed a fault. Not recorded what happened if they were all different - presumably back to the slide rule and log tables.

Yes, the '2 out of 3 vote' developed by NASA in the 1960s became a common technique used in a lot of control systems including aircraft 'fly-by-wire' where the cockpit controls have no physical connection to the control surfaces being operated.

Thanks for your continuing help on the forum Simon, and interesting thoughts on the NASA theme, I’ve heard say, not surprisingly, the technology was nothing like today, yet much was achieved. Unless of course, you don’t believe the moon landing ever happened.

There was also the Omega Speedmaster (Moonwatch). Hand wound because an automatic movement apparently wouldn't "wind up" in zero gravity.

Correct. An automatic winder watch has a small pendulum rocking back and forth as the wearer moves around. Zero gravity means no swing...
I had on in the past; if not worn for a while you had to flick it back and forth for about 30 seconds before putting it on.
