Air filter box

Just bought a 1961 948cc which was nicely restored 15 years or so ago. The engine bay looks really clean and the air filter box is sparkling. It's the small cylindrical one with a trumpet like intake. I think this should be an oil bath. Am I right? Instead what I find is a Framm filter sort of squashed in a bit. I would have thought this would restrict airflow. Am I right about that too. What would you do if you had this? Sorry its a bit of a boring post!

1961 948cc should have a cartridge tyle filter, and it sounds like yours is correct. Oil bath was on early cars. I don't have a 948 filter to hand for photo, but will see if I can find an illustration from a parts catalogue for you to look at.

My wifes 1959 048 had the sane air box as you. It works fine and you would not find any advantage in fiddling with it.

Thanks everyone. Yes the photo is the one I have. Which then is the correct filter number? What's in there at the moment is one like you fit in a 1098 and which is readily available from ESM. The rubber ring at the larger end has been trimmed a bit and its been positioned with this at the bottom.

Correct. The same filter, fitted the other way up.... Original Pt No BCA 4582.

Yes, that is correct - for goodness sake don't go putting oil in there!

Got a new Framm filter from ESM and it won't fit over the housing that the air filter box sits on so it looks like it will have to go in upside down.

They typically don't just drop in and takes a bit of pushing directly on the bottom rubber to move it down the carb inlet.

If you're having a problem, then post a photo of your set up and we'll confirm that all is as it should be, or suggest solutions.

Yes, that's right. I have the same set-up and it takes a bit of fiddling to get it in snugly.....but it will go!
