tyre sizes for standard rims

Post by Pebbles17 »

Will 155 x 14" tyres fit standard 4.5 rims (0n1970 traveller) ? Any advice is sought as the normal 145 width tyre does not give much choice.

Sell 155x14's as compatible with the following comment (pretty much the same info on the various makers they sell):
Tyre-155/14 Radial Nangkang. 155/80/R14A high quality radial tyre recommended or fitment to 4.5J wheels. Please note ETRO (etrto.org) recommend 155.14 tyres should be fitted to a wheel width of between 4” and 5” and therefore do not recommend fitment on the standard 3J wheel. Their recommendation is however not a legal requirement.

IF your Morris Traveller has 4.5" wheels then a 155/80/14 tyre will be fine. However the standard size wheel is only 3" wide and a 145/80/14 tyre is the correct fitment. Lots of owners have fitted 155 section tyres over the years with no real downside but having tried both I do feel that the correct 145 section tyres make for a better drive. There is no shortage of tyres this size. I have recently had a set of Blockley Tyres 145/80/14 tyres fitted and am very pleased with them.
