hi folks need some help, been trying to get reg number and v5 from dvla they have been totally useless. i told them i was restoreing it and they said they can not issue it in case i change too much body work and it wont be the same as when it was made. i am only changing o/s & n/s tie plates and top and bottom front cross member.. chassis number is M/A 253 D 988268.... any help much appreciated.

You are right, they are as useful as a (insert your favorite simile). When I brought my Traveller back to the UK I took it for a MOT. They said that they could not do it because my car had French number plates. I asked the DVLA what registration number I should use and they told me that they could not issue me one without an MOT.
I recon that when the work is done try again and you can demonstrate that the car has not undergone any changes from the original specifications. The forms that you may need are on their web site. They are not helpful but maybe a friendly MOT person can help you out. Good luck.

I imported one from Australia and was told it required an MOT before it could be registered. The MOT station said it would be fine to issue a new MOT certificate registered to the chassis number and that's what they did. That was sent on to the DVLA who then registered the car with no problem.

That said, the DVLA do not always do things sensibly. I have recently put a car back on the road after several years lay-up. I had the latest V5 issued - as confirmed by the DVLA's own website - and took this to the local Post Office who taxed it (as it was already insured and was exempt from MOTs) and told me they would send the V5 to DVLA as it was "an old one". I was told that I would receive a new one within a few weeks. 2 months later I still have no V5. The Post Office tell me that it was definitely sent to DVLA. The DVLA tell me that they never received it . They say that I can apply for a new one at a cost of £25.00 "to replace the one I have lost!" I am not inclined to pay them. They also said that they would email me the forms I need to fill in, but 3 weeks later I have still heard nothing so will have to chase them once more. If anyone has ever tried to telephone the DVLA you will know that it isn't a quick or straightforward process

i had an imported lambretta from italy 3 years back sent papers off no one cam check it and got uk reg and v5 back in just over 2 weeks but cant get nothing sorted for a car built in this country ,mind bogling .

Dave, is this car also imported or is it a UK car already ? Does it already have a registration number and you just need a V5 ? or is the registration number not on the DVLA records ? If the car already has a reg number at DVLA and you just need a document, fill in a V62 and send off a £25 payment.

If the car has a number but is not on the DVLA records, you will need to provide the evidence linking the number to the car e.g old buff logbook, mot certificates etc and have this approved by the club and the DVLA should re-issue the number. MMOC have a DVLA liaison officer for this purpose - Simon Mitchell. Simon is also the main moderator for the messageboard, so find him on here and get in contact.

I have seen in the past, the DVLA are reluctant to issue numbers or inspect cars that have been dismantled or are being repaired. I have been advised in the past to claim back the vehicle number before starting any dismantling or restoration works. It may be that they think your car has been significantly dismantled when in fact you are just doing some small repairs.

Depending on what it is that you need, I'd recommend making contact with Simon, who will be able to give you solid advice.

hi no not got a reg number car had no paperwork i know ive been stupid but needed a prodject, i was in touch with dvla services first and explained erverything to them,who said dont worry fill in v62 right a letter telling them i had contacted them and it would get sorted. so i did all that photographed car and chassia plate. sent them that they said they needed more photos of the front and back of the car so sent them than they said they might have to send someone i said to send them. but they just recently told me to re apply again when the car is on its own wheels and running. bloody pain.

As Manyminors already said, you can get an MOT on the chassis number. I’ve done this on 3 cars, then applied for the registration. On the last one, they sent someone (actually sub contracted) to inspect the car. They only wanted to see that there was actually a car to see and take note of the VIN number. No inspection of rebuild work.
I asked what the purpose really was and was told it was to prevent insurance scams. Apparently there has been a significant numbers of cars registered that didn’t actually exist, then insured, reported stolen , then claims made.
By getting the car MOT’d, at least someone will have seen the car to begin with,

I think Dave's problem is, the car is in many pieces and not in a position to get an MOT currently. DVLA are now very reluctant to inspect or sign off on cars that are in pieces or undergoing restoration. In the past, I have been advised to have a car inspected prior to dismantling.

As Minor OCD says, this work is now subcontracted to private garages, DVLA do not carry out this type of work any more.

Seems like the car will need to be restored/rebuilt and then taken for an MOT as a first step and then an age related number would be issued.

How do you drive a car to a garage for an MOT if you don't have a VRN? Surely you run the risk of being stopped by the fuzz or caught on a camera?

As discussed here, you will be able to retrieve the registration, but you will need to get it near complete before once again applying, then you will be able to supply a list of mods or repairs to satisfy them the car is as standard.
