Evening all,
Apologies if this is a daft question but I assume it’s cheaper to take out a separate classic insurance for a classic car rather than adding it to your existing modern car insurance?
I know when I took possession of my late father in law’s car a few years back it was much cheaper to add it to our existing policy, instead of taking out a separate one… but I guess with classics it’s different?
Also, with my modern insurance which is in my name, I’ve always added my husband as a named driver at no real additional cost because he is my spouse. However when I called a classic broker for a quote a few weeks ago, and the quote came out higher than I was expecting, the lady advised me it was because I had added my husband on?
Is this normal to pay much higher premiums if adding an additional driver to a classic policy? Even if that person is your spouse?

With classic insurance you often get the option to add an agreed value within the policy. However, if that isn’t a priority, it would pay to get a price for both options. I’ve heard it can but not always be cheaper adding another driver.

Thank you for getting back to me. I’ll definitely try both options then. I’ll also ring round a few more companies as I only tried two. Perhaps it varies from place to place!

If I understand correctly, you have not got the car yet, so there is no rush to insure. With that in mind, at the beginning of November the MMOC will be making a really exciting announcement about insurance. I think that you will find it both relevant and beneficial Don't do anything until you have seen the announcement.

Ooh really!
Tbh I don’t plan to take out insurance yet as although I have started looking at cars for sale, realistically I’ll probably wait to get my manual driving test out of the way before I purchase a car.. that decision is subject to change if I can’t get a test booked for ages though

I’m mainly calling round for quotes to give myself some idea of costs, although it very much depends on what I end up getting. Seen so many that I like!

That sounds intriguing though… I shall look forward to that announcement

We have a multi-car policy with Lancaster Insurance which covers our classic Morris, our new('ish) everyday car and the two in between which are both 24 years old. We have an agreed value on the three oldest cars.

Ok good to know, I’ll wait until I am closer to actually purchasing something and consider all my options then.
