Engine change.

Post by Firefly »

Hi all . I have a 1960 with a 948 engine in and a smooth gearbox which has been rebuilt. I have been given a 1100 engine will this engine go on to my 949 smooth gearbox . Or are there some modified needed. Cheers

It fits OK, but there are some configuration aspects.
I found out the hard way, as when I brought my '55 SII back in 2017, he was supposed to have been updated to a 948 with the smooth case long stick 803 gearbox rebuilt to have 948 internals whilst retaining the long gearstick.
Turned out he had a 1098, bottom line being that the wrong Rear Plate was fitted.
The mounting plate had to be correct for the clutch and gearbox, nothing to do with the engine size.
They introduced the Ribbed Box and associated Clutch to handle the bigger engine, but so long as you don't try to exploit the full capabilities of the 1098, the 948 will be OK. You'll just need to use the 948 rear plate and 948 clutch, not the one already fitted to the 1098.
