Ex goverment fleet dash photo
Hi all, if the paintwork of a 1971 morris minor traveller was army green and was an ex government vehicle (it also has a black KPH speedo as apposed to black faced MPH speedo) am assuming it was in service in Europe? what government dept would it be likely to have been in service?
Has anyone got a photo please of the dash of a 1971 Morris Minor travellers ex government fleet please- vehicle had a steering lock.

Speaking from personal experience, not of Minor Travellers specifically but of MOD vehicles in general, if intended for service with British Forces in Europe, they were principally LHD.
Is this a LHD you're referring to?
If ex-MOD, then it should have the appropriate MOD Identity plates as Car Utility 4x2.
See this old topic of a RHD MOD Traveller. viewtopic.php?p=527217#p527217

Many thanks for the reply, much appreciated, yes am sorry I should have put that, its certainly was LHD according to the additional government dept plate and what you put about the 4x2 bit is correct. Its clearly been converted back from LHD as you can see where it has been resprayed using blue and you can see where the glovebox surround brackets were vs the glovebox lid hinges.
The badge states Car Utility 4x2 LHD Morris 1000. What does the 4c2 stand for please.

4 Wheels x 2 Driven, rather than 4x4 which a Landrover would be.trmorrisminor wrote: ↑Tue Aug 19, 2025 11:02 am

Thats very useful to know, thankyou, have learnt something new today.
The government tag says 34 FH 42 next to vehicle number. Does this say anything about where the car was based?
Many thanks

Re: Ex goverment fleet dash photo
34 FH 42 is simply the registration given by the MOD.
In this case Army, Royal Air Force tend to be A* having originally been 'Air Ministry' while Royal Navy were R*
The Landrover example I gave being RAF. 40 AM 91.
Occasionally vehicles could be handed over between services to cover shortfalls, retaining their allocated number, but it was pretty unusual to do so.
No link by registration to where the vehicle was used.
As a LHD, your car was most likely in West Germany, but could have been anywhere in Europe that the Army were.
I can't help you with CONT and CODE meanings.
I can tell you that 16A/3039 was the RAF Supply System Stock number for a 109" Wheelbase Landrover. (16A was the 'section' for all 'vehicle-complete')
The 2320-99-8062530 is the allocated NATO Stock Number (NSN) recognised by any NATO Military supply system.
Incidentally, the Internet now that AI is involved, gives a load of Cr*p, deciding that the first 2 numbers denote the year of registration.
Complete Rollocks.

Re: Ex goverment fleet dash photo
Thankyou for the info, much appreciated. Have learnt alot , thankyou. So on the Land Rover the middle two letter are on the Vehicle number are AM meaning the A stands for Army/ Royal Airforce , but on my plate I have 34 FH 42 , I don't have an A or an R so does the F or the H stand for anything?
Also on the photos you kindly posted of the RHD Morris traveller , the left button on the dash is not a standard Morris Minor dash switch, is this switch fitted to all Government Minors as mine certainly doesn't have one? Do you know what the switch is for please?

As the Army were/are the principle user of MoD vehicles, they have most of the possible combinations.
So your FH is just one of many combinations.
Take at look at this Wiki page and scroll down to the section on Armed Forces vehicles.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_r ... ed_Kingdom
Don't forget we are speaking of a system that came in post WWII and lasted until they ran out of 2 Number, 2 letter, 2 Number combinations.
Back then, the MOD owned all it's vehicles, not it only owns the 'specialist' stuff and White Fleet (cars, vans,buses/coaches etc) are all leased vehicles.
As to the switch, I've no idea, but I would guess it was/is a Hazard Warning Lights switch...
