Alternator mounting brackets etc?

I'm considering an alternator conversion due to a dynamo problem.

What Lucas alternators have people fitted typically from Minis or other makes/models (I don't want to use a new conversion kit - the Indian/Chinese made alternators in the kits do not fill me with confidence)? I'm looking to source an original UK made (good used, UK recon or NOS) Lucas alternator and then use an alternator plug and loom from one of the Minor spares suppliers.

With that in mind, could anyone enlighten me as to why the rear most alternator brackets appear to differ between A series engines (such as fitted to Minors) and A+ series engines (typically later Minis)?

Is it due to different mounting points on the block due to casting differences between A and A+ engines or is to accommodate a different size and or type of alternator?

Are you sure you have a dynamo problem and not a control box (RB106) problem? It may be as simple as cleaning the points in the RB106.

Unless you really need the greater output of an alternator, a dynamo is a very robust unit that can be rebuilt over and over.

Bought this one through ebay, now been fitted 2 years with no issues. Went straight on my 1098 engine but it already had an alternator.
Only changed because 6 year old alternator was still charging but warning light not going out. Kept old one to repair.

Incidentally, there are various supplier of genuine reconditioned Lucas dynamos or a number of companies who will supply on exchange or rebuild your own unit. Often, the issue is within the realm of the home mechanic (e.g brushes).

You do need the special alternator rear mount to do the job properly.
If you cannot obtain the correct rear mount you can get away with just fitting a suitable length of threaded rod which goes through the water pump bracket and the original rear mount and use a couple of nuts either side of the alternator rear mount bracket.

It is the same rear alternator mounting bracket as your picture above.
It should be noted - because of variations in the distance between the alternator mounting brackets the alternator rear bracket is fitted with a split tube so the alternator can be moved on the tube to suit as required. Therefore if your alternator is not fitted with the split tube you will need to obtain or make one.
