Nope, different wheel, different side.

philthehill wrote: Mon Aug 04, 2025 8:56 am If you have wear on the inner end of the half-shaft coupled with wear in the diff sun gears you will get wheel rock.
The rear wheel bearing being a single race will not contain any play in the bearing.
The inner end of the half-shaft supports the bearing and should eliminate the rocking play.
If C3 wheel bearings are fitted the wheel rock will be compounded because of the extra clearances found in a C3 bearing.
Understood thanks Phil. Might go some way towards explaining why when I swapped the halfshaft for the spare the "wobble" reduced.

Is it (a bit of wobble) a problem?

And that was painless to the other side was it?

Only a broken stud. I have had all studs replaced with longer ones, and replaced the bearing whilst I was at it.

Yes. I a not trying to be awkward or horrible but this a very serious thing that we sort of laughed about but you were lucky to walk away from. The other side you say. Yes but what kind of loading would the wheel and axle flange have sustained when that other side wheel was lost at considerable speed?

I get where you are coming from, but I can't imagine it's much different for the other side as when going over a pothole. For a brief moment all the load is carried by the other side, then the car sits down on the u-bolt studs of the n/s and equilibrium is restored.

ndevans wrote: Sun Aug 03, 2025 8:05 pm How much run-out is acceptable on the wheels? I'd expect a bit, as it's difficult to get all the mating surfaces mirror smooth, but I do think 2-2.5mm is a bit excessive.
30 thou seems to be common figure quoted on various internet sites for alloy wheels. Why don't you contact the suppliers of your brand and get a figure. Even if its just for peace of mind.
But it staying with side of the car, not the wheel does suggest issue other than the wheel.

Thanks. So that's about ¾mm, and I seem to be within that now on both sides. I'm going to stop worrying about it now.

Well you’ve given it a lot of attention, so if you can relax, well done.

I think I've done my due dilligence, and I am happy that nothing is about to break or fall off. Hub nut is tight, lock washer in place, bearing looks & feels ok, hub feels solid & secure, wheel nuts were tight. Not much else I can check really, short of a full strip down of the back axle, is there?
I suppose I could take the wheels to a tyre place and ask them to check for true running, but I don't think I'll be much the wiser.

Maybe the lads were just being mischievous, such people do exist.

I was about to say the same :). There must have been considerable forces on the whole axle in that episode.

Now in Brittany, and so far as I can tell we still have 4 wheels. Haven't actually counted them, but I will check later.

About to board the St Malo at Pompey.
