Oil in carburettor

Post by betjent »

Hi folks :)

I have the HS2 carburettor on my traveller. Oil is needed added in the damping piston on it.
Is it normal that this carburettor uses large quantums of oil ? - i mean - It needs refill every week !! - im only driving a few miles at week !!
Theres no leaks anywhere from it under the bowl.
I thinh its odd - can anybody give an explanation ? :P

Cheers :D

Don't fill to the top of the orifice!

The SU oil chamber has a drain hole to prevent overfilling. Add a manual to the "wish list" :-)
You may want to get a small bottle of SU oil....

It only needs filling to the top of the inner steel tube that the damper rod sits in so that when the damper rod is in place then it's full to the top (or thereabouts). Obviously if you fill it to the top of the tube and THEN insert the damper rod then some will spill out.

Oil in HS2 Carburettor

Post by betjent »

Hi again
Thanks for the answers.
Im not in doubt about how much oil that is the correct amount. I also have a manual on the car , and knows exactly how much and where the oil is to be added.
the problem is that I constantly can add oil up to the mark in the tube - which I think is strange.

cheers

Don't worry about it - just stop adding oil - the oil will settle to where it needs to be.

Right, well we had to make sure!

The only thing to do if it's ALL leaking out is to remove the piston and check it for leaks. If it's leaking from a crack somewhere then replace the carb piston and dashpot with a known good unit.

When it runs low - does the engine show any sign of flat spots or 'gasping' when accelerating ?

Ah right, so the oil is not draining out then (otherwise the engine would mis-behave). Like bmcecosse says, it will find it's own level and be happy with it. I was under the impression that it was draining out due to a crack/leak or something.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
