Is my Minor in original Red body color?

Post by Ralf »

Hi, I bought a nice red Minor imported from Denmark. Also the interieur is red. :D
After the paperwork the car was first registered 20.03.1962.
It is a Minor 1000 with a 1100cc engine installed.
Car ident number is: M/A 2S3 DL 941819
One of the reason why I bought this car is the nice red body color combined with red interieur. I haven't seen such a red Minor till now.
To me it looks not that the body color was repainted in the past, so I assume it is the original body color.

Could somebody tell me if there was a factory produced red body color for my type Minor?
For the restoration I would be interested to know what kind of red it is.

Cheers Ralf

Royal Mail vans were in similar colour (Post Office Red) but I dont think it would be a standard colour for any saloons :-?

Search for heritage certificate Grayson. If you supply the car number and purchase the certificate, then it will give you production data including the original colour.

Hi Ralf

I had a red Morris Minor which I bought in 1993 and sold in 1998.
It was my first car and could be the one you have now.
Mine was from 1962 and has a funny history.
I was a apprentice when I bought it and where I worked used to be a Morris workshop and my car was originally bought from this shop.
My Foreman in the shop remembered both the car and the customer - it had all originally papers and at the time in 1962, it was displayed in their very small salesroom.
My car was white from new.
I dismantled the while engine and gearbox and repaired them and went to see my pennfriend in Holland and Belgium in that car in 1994.
Brilliant trip - I still miss that car and if its the same I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.
Best regards
Morten - Denmark

I’ve checked out a comprehensive list of saloon body colours of all models of the Minor, none of which show one finished in red.
Sometimes there is a giveaway sign in a well hidden area of the interior, where you could find traces of the original colour. Maybe under the dash.

A red like that was never offered as a standard colour on the Minor 1000 cars - although several I know of have been changed to red later on  8)
