17year old Insurance for Minor

Post by TomPartridge »

I am sure this question has been asked a few times, but the threads I saw were a few years ago - so hoping to get some upto date responses.

My 17yr old just passed his test today and is now desperate to get out in his 1966 2 door he spent the winter doing some welding and spraying on.

What companies are the best for cover and cost?

Thanks!

I've mentioned my first and latest premiums in an adjacent thread: First Drive Out.
But of course, neither will apply to a 17 year old of today.
You may find that including an older driver in the application may make the premium lower. But don't put him as the additional driver if he's in fact the main one.
People here have happily used Footman James and Adrian Flux. Carol Nash used to be good, but seem to have withdrawn from the classis car market. Or to be more precise, they reject any change to the car compared to how it left the showroom.
Not allowed (unless originally equipped):
Seatbelts
Radial tyres
Screenwasher
Alternator
Later engine
Improved brakes
Electronic ignition
etc

I was once a 17 year old driver of a Morris Minor. The same Morris Minor I still drive 36 years later. In those days we had brokers who knew the individual insurers and their appetite for risk.

I use footman James, but will be looking around as usual very soon.
Mods to the car will make a big difference, a standard engine etc will help keep the premium low.
Also car security, where is it parked overnight, is it fitted with a disk-lock, are the windows etched with the number plate, is it fitted with a battery dis-car-nect ?
Some thing you cannot change, Your postcode for instance will make a difference too, are you in an area of high car theft?
Limited mileage insurance can help, is he/she likely to travel less than 6k-8k miles p.a. ?
Try Peter James insurance too.
Good luck,
